Lake Angelus Hike

Mount Angelus Hike with Abel Tasman Trips the barn cabins and camping

A few quick pointers to get you started on the Lake Angelus Hike

  • 1hr 50 min from The Barn, Marahau
  • 2 days. 12.2km 6h up. Spend the night at Angelus Hut. 11.2km 6h down
  • Level: Hard. You’ll need some hiking experience in the alpine area for this hike. The track over the ridge is tricky with climbing over loose rocks, steep slopes, and sometimes walking through snow. Chances of avalanche and rockslides. Take your time and don’t rush.

This track starts much like the Mount Robert Circuit but instead of turning left after Relax Shelter you’ll follow the ridge all the way towards Flagtop 1690m and Julius Summit 1794m before arriving at Angelus Hut 1650m. You’ll be amazed by the views of snowy mountaintops, blue lakes, and the rough shapes of the tops at the ridge. I did this hike in late October and at some points, I had to cross large snowy areas where I sank down to my knees. Also a lot of climbing over loose rocks and gravel slides. It’s nice to hike with walking sticks in these circumstances for extra balance.

All this effort is well worth the amazing views and the comfortable sunny deck at Angelus Hut.

When I did the track the weather was so nice I decided to drop of my bag at the hut and go for a swim in a beautiful blue lake just a few minutes up the track towards Mount Angelus. The best feeling after a long hike!

The Next Day

After an early night in (don’t forget your earplugs whenever you’ll sleep in a hut), I decided to take the Speargrass Track back to the carpark. From the hut this track goes up for about 20 min and then down following a beautiful creek. There are a few river crossings and maybe you’ll have to take off your shoes once or twice. After slowly descending in this Alpine area you’ll reach the forest where you’ll keep following the river which will grow bigger and bigger the further you go. At 1/3 you’ll come across Speargrass Hut from where the path gets easier all the way to the second carpark. Will you go for a cool-down swim at the jetty along mt Robert Rd before heading back? 🙂

Tip 1: Be prepared. No cooking facilities provided in the hut. Bring your own cooking supplies and sleeping bag. The water needs to be treaded before drinking (I used water purification pills)

Tip 2: Check weather updates before you go. Make sure you’re well equipped for all possible weather conditions.
