Quick Tips to Wharariki Beach

The drive through Golden Bay to the northern tip of the South Island is an amazing journey. Wharariki is the last stop on the road, and it is totally worth it. You will see the amazing coastline, rock formations, and caves of Cape Farewell and Wharariki beach!

Drive up to Wharariki Rd and take a right turn at Cape Farewell Lookout. At the end of this road is a small car park. From here it’s just a 10 min walk up to the first lookout point: Cape Farewell. The track leads you to the left following the green hilly coastline with steep cliffs and breathtaking views. A few climbs here and there but just short distances.

When you get to Whairariki Beach make sure to take some time to explore. There are so many interesting caves and rock formations in the sea. Great place for kids to play or have lunch.

Somewhere halfway to the beach the track continues into the native bush. If you want to explore this beautiful area a little further you turn right at the junction and extent your hike with an extra 6.3km 1.5h loop that leads back to the same point. If you are craving a coffee and snack from Archway Cafe you turn left for a more inland route of 2km 20 min. After this little cafe, it’s a 1.7km 18 min walk back to the car park following the dirt road.
