Mt Robert Hike Abel Tasman Trips the barn cabins and camping

Mt Robert Quick Tips:

  • 1hr 50 min from The Barn, Marahau
  • At SH 63 towards St Arnoud take the Mount Robert Rd exit and park at the very end of the dirt road (second carpark). There is a toilet at the carpark.
  • 9km 5h. Loop.
  • Level: Moderate. A good climb for the 1,5h or so.

What a Hike!

I totally fell in love with this hike! You get the best of everything. Lakes, forest, snowy mountaintops, soft grassy hills, thousands of birds and amazing views.

The track starts at the carpark with a steady climb. It’s not that hard because you’ll probably want to take a lot of breaks to enjoy the view at Lake Rotoiti. You’ll enter a forest which leads up to (another) great viewpoint of the lake. This is the beginning of the ridge and you’ll have some more amazing views to come! After a little hut, Relax Shelter, with a water source (needs to be treated before drinking) you’ll turn left and cross a grassy hill before reaching Bushline Hut. This is a great place to spend a night! After this point the path goes further down through native bush to the first carpark. From here it’s a 500 meter walk back to your car at the second carpark.

Tip: The weather can change quite rapidly in this Alpine area. Be prepared.

I loved this area so much that I decided to go back and do another hike: Lake Angelus.
