Abel Tasman Updates

Closures for Spring 2022

What has happened?

The storm event in early spring caused widespread damage across Tasman and Marlborough. There is still full road access to the Barn and the start of the Abel Tasman, however, sections of the Abel Tasman are temporarily closed.

Anchorage to Torrent High Tide Route

Opens 2023

The high tide crossing is closed, however, you can still take the faster low tide route, if the tides are correct. You can cross 1.5 hours on either side of low tide. Check out the tide times here!

Medlands to Tonga Quary

Back up and running connecting one of the best walking sections in the Abel Tasman

Tonga Quarry

What does this mean for my trip?

All services around the park are still running at 100% capacity. This includes water taxi’s, kayaking trips, canyoning, sailing. This is great as it means that there are still lots of options to do!! The best thing about the Abel Tasman is you can create so many different ways to explore rather than just the one-dimensional alpine track. Doing multi-discipline adventures really does create the best and most memorable experience!!

Day Trips

Multi Day Trips

Option 1 - One Night

Boat from Marahau to Totaraui at 9am. you can do the Northern Loop from here over Gibbs hill and back to Totaranui (ads another night on, but will potentially set you up for the tidal Crossing). Else head south to Awaroa (2.5 hours from Totaranui, check tide times here) or Oneatuti (4-5 hours) for the night. From here we can organise a marine reserve kayaking trip the following day which is the best kayaking trip in the Abel Tasman, and then they will boat you back to Marahau that afternoon!

Add on another night?

Following the above trip, you can stay the night at Anchorage or Te Pukatea Bay. In the morning, you could walk back up to Medlands for the afternoon and get the water taxi back down to Marahau. Else do one of the awesome Canyoning trips down the Torrent River. They will drop you back in Marahau at the end of the day a very happy camper!
