A few quick Cable Bay tips:
- 1h 15min from The Barn, Marahau.
- Park at the beach at Airlie Street and walk up the road to the beginning of the track. Please respect the parking spots for locals further up this road.
- Length: 16km 6h Out and return.
- Level: Moderate. There are some climbs along the way but thanks to the views still very enjoyable.
Close to Nelson lies this very special track which will lead you over the private land of a sheep farm, along the coastal cliffs, and through a pine forest before you’ll arrive at the Cable Bay lookout point. The views along this track are absolutely beautiful!
After you park your car at the beach and walk up to the end of Airlie Street you’ll enter the track through a farm’s gate and make your way up the hill following a steady climbing 4WD road. At the end of this road, you’ll reach the hilly coastal cliffs. When you get to the top of this first hill (and after you’ve enjoyed the view at Nelson and Tasman Bay) keep an eye out for a gate on the right hand that will lead you into a pine forest. It’s easy to miss.
After passing this forest you’ll get to the second open field (again with great views) where the track will lead you up to the Cable Bay lookout point. You’ll return the same way you came or do the little variation at the end.
Tip 1: Please respect the stock and farm property. Before you go check if it’s lambing season (early August to early October). The track is usually closed during this time.
Tip 2: You can start the track at 2 points at Airlie Street. I prefer to start at the farm because the climb is less steep than the other option. It’s nice to go down the other way on your way back.
