A short guide to Tasman Regional
We have put together some of our favourite day trips around the Tasman region. Just some of the reasons that Tasman Is a great place to live and explore! It’s not only awesome adventures in the National Park but a whole range of exploring all within a couple hours drive!
Harwoods Hole - Short Trip
Harwoods Hole is New Zealand’s deepest vertical shaft located at the back end of the Abel Tasman National Park. The best access is by vehicle taking the gorgeous drive along Takaka Hill over looking Tasman Bay (gravel road). From there it is an awesome short track (45 mins each way) to get to the Hole through the old part of the forest.
Be sure to check the DOC site for any safety updates before heading out.
There is a cool little cafe/artisan called The Woolshed Canaan for a coffee and meal to treat yourself on the way out. They also have a wicked little store as well. You can easily combine link this up with other day trips around the Tasman region.

Tasman Great Taste Trail Trip
Its mix of rural, urban, coastal and riverside scenery is a fabulous feast for the eyes. Natural beauty, however, is only part of the appeal, with this trail serving up a tantalising array of tasty attractions. From art galleries and boutique shopping, to fruit stalls, cafes, craft beer pubs and winery restaurants.
Forming a big loop around the Nelson–Tasman region, the trail can be enjoyed in full over several days or dipped into on short hops or day rides. Base yourself in one place or overnight along the way. Either way you’re set for a super-sweet sightseeing tour with flavours to suit almost anyone.
Golden Bay - long trip
Golden Bay is full of little treats, whether it be Te Waikoropupu Springs, Wharariki Beach, Totaranui Beach, Farewell Spit. In addition, there is great range of pubs and cafes including The Mussel Inn and/or The Wholemeal Cafe. After that you can even catch you own fish at Antoki Salmon!
Takaka is only an hour and a bit over the hill so is a great place for day trips but you could easily spend a few days over there!
Caving - short trip
If exploring the depths of the Takaka Hills limestone caves is of interest, then check out the Ngarua Caves. For instance there are hourly guided trips though the limestone mazes making it a great trip for all ages.
Riwaka Resurgence - short trip
A short 5-10 min walk through some original forest up a scattering of ancient stone steps takes you to the source of the mighty Riwaka River. Once you arrive, The Resurgence is the super fresh-spring river making for river side picnic or even a quick dip in the plunge pool.
Tin Line Bay - Short trip
Marahau bay is quite expansive and great for kids to play in the shallows. Furthermore, the next beach into the Park is Tinline Bay and has some cool tunnels and that Marahau tree on a rock! Additionally the good exploring opportunities are just 15min walk from The Barn.
